Consumers rely on food safety labels to make informed choices, but the truth is, they can be confusing, hard to understand, and misleading with unfamiliar words and vague terms that make food seem healthier than they are. Take sugar, for example. Food companies use more than 60 different words (dextrose, barley malt, nectar – to name a few) to describe sugar alone! Not to mention the label’s formatting which can be hard to read, and it’s numerical information which requires a good understanding of math to decipher.
