Continuing the Integration of Health Literacy in Simulation Education

The UAMS Center for Health Literacy continued its efforts to support the integration of health literacy competencies in the health profession curriculum. In collaboration with the Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice (IPE), CHL developed a two-part series with the purpose of incorporating health literacy into Simulation Education (SIM).

Part 1, launched earlier in 2023, provided foundational training for UAMS faculty on health literacy competencies and why they should be integrated into the curriculum for health profession students. Building on this foundation, we worked with partners in IPE to develop and launch Part 2 of the series, titled “Incorporating Health Literacy Competencies into Simulation Learning.” This interactive workshop was offered to UAMS faculty and staff, providing participants with the opportunity to build on their learning from Part 1. Participants were encouraged to bring written information on course SIM activities to identify points where health literacy competencies could be incorporated.

Our work in this area was presented at the Roundtables for Engaging an Alliance for Collaborative Healthcare (REACH) IPE Conference in the Spring of 2024. The conference provided opportunities for small group discussions that facilitated networking and the exchanging of ideas to further promote interprofessional education.

Looking ahead, CHL plans to continue to offer both Part 1 and Part 2 of this training in the coming year. In addition to these training offerings, we plan to support UAMS faculty in further incorporating health literacy in simulation education.
