The UAMS Center for Health Literacy launched the UAMS Patient Education Portal (PEP), a significant initiative designed to enhance patient care through high-quality education resources. Effective patient education is critical to improving the overall patient experience. When patients understand their health, they are more likely to take better care of themselves, follow their treatment plans, and make informed decisions. This can lead to better health, fewer hospital visits, and lower health care costs.
To fulfill our commitment to providing accurate and accessible patient education materials for UAMS patients and families, CHL worked with the ServiceNow team to create an electronic system for managing and updating these materials. This initiative involved careful planning, design, and testing, leading to the creation of the PEP. The system offers an efficient, user-friendly portal to organize and maintain educational materials used throughout the hospital system.
The portal improves staff access to essential patient education materials by keeping the content in a single, easy-to-navigate system. This centralized system ensures that educational content is regularly reviewed and updated to maintain accuracy and relevance.
By simplifying the process of creating, editing, storing, and using patient education materials, the portal ensures that the content is tailored to the specific needs of UAMS patients and families while meeting clinical and regulatory standards. The portal also helps make the work easier for staff to provide patients with the best possible health information.
Since its launch, the PEP has already proven to be a valuable resource for UAMS. With 851 active materials available in the portal, staff have downloaded materials 609 times and generated 384 tasks, including 159 sent for clinical review. The portal has seen 650 unique sessions on its homepage, and 141 unique users have accessed materials directly — including over 1,400 guest views from users not logged into the system.
